Save Money, Save the Earth: Boycott Bottled Water

by Rick on March 23, 2010

Bottled water. We know it’s nasty, from start to finish: turning oil into bottles, exploiting natural water supplies Story of Stuff: Bottled Water(or just filtering tap water!), and a huge half billion bottles per year waste problem. In honor of yesterday’s World Water Day, the Story of Stuff is out with a brilliant new video, which explains the bottled water boondoggle in just about the clearest terms I’ve seen. Check it here: http://storyofstuff.org/bottledwater/. (Props to the Wilderness Society for the tip.)

Fortunately, this is a pretty easy problem to solve: just don’t buy it – either the hype or the bottled water. First, the hype: the big bottled water companies (yes, these are the usual multinational suspects, by the way) have spent millions to convince us tap water is foul-tasting and toxic. The reality? In head-to-head contests for both purity and taste, tap water usually wins.

What can you do? Take your own water. I now take my trusty bottle with me everywhere I go – it’s just a habit now. And it’s paid for itself ten times over – that bottled water ain’t cheap, folks. The stuff in my tap? Damn near free.

So do the smart thing, and save green while going green – ditch the bottled water and pick up a reusable bottle today. Here are some sweet deals on eco-friendly reusable bottles from Nubius Organics:
